Holiday Weekend Kalikot: New Tires

Its been a while since I wanted to change the tires on the Bandersnatch. Just like airsoft, the hobby (or is it obsession) never ends. This long Labor Day weekend I finally got to put on new meats on the Bandersnatch: a set of Maxxis Ignitors

The front tire I had for several months was a Kenda Nevegal and for the rear I have a Intense System. The Kenda Nevegal is probably the best front tire I've had so far. Grips really well even on loose rocky conditions. The drawback of the Nevegal is that it is a bit heavy and the rolling resistance is high. The Intense System has a similar tread pattern of the Kenda Nevegal but in smaller microknobs. The Intense System is probably the worst tire I've used so far. Air it low and the rolling resistance is very high. Up the air pressure and the ride is harsh; especially on a hardtail. Whether I'm riding at below or within the manufacturer's recommended air pressure, traction is poor and seems to be suitable only on moist hardpack.

The recipient of new tires

I made the mistake of installing a matching System on the front and I will not make the same mistake again. I wont be installing those tires and will be keeping it as a last resort backup.

First to go was the rear tire. I've gotten proficient with the tire removal and replacement that it took me only a few minutes to do so.

Tire change was quick and easy

I was surprised that the Maxxis Ignitors mounted on the wheel easily. In comparison, the Kenda Nevegal required some effort and use of tire levers and the Intense System was an exercise in patience.

Off goes the front as well

The Maxxis Ignitor is designed for both front and rear use I removed the Kenda front. I've read good reviews about using the Ignitors as a front tire so I'm gonna give it a try.

The tread comparison. Kenda Nevegal on the left and Intense System on the right. Its pretty obvious why the Nevegal has lots of grip due to the big and aggressive knobs. The System despite having microknobs still had lots of rolling resistance.

All mounted and aired up to 40 PSI

Test riding it around my complex and in front of my garage it does 'feel' like the tires are rolling easier and faster. The 'whirr-whirr' sound of the front tire is significantly lessened, hopefully thats a sign of low rolling resistance; the old rear tire didn't make noise but was a heavy roller. At this time I have it aired at 40 PSI for both and rear. That still may change for better ride compliance (cushioning), trail conformity (tire conforming over rocks and terrain versus bouncing off) and grip (lower pressure means a bit more wider tread or footprint).

Can't wait for a dirt ride!

GeoManGear Magicshine Light

Time for an update!

About 2 weeks ago my friend and I went on our first night ride. The plan was to be on our usual 'home trail' and start after 1900HRS. Summers here in SoCal doesn't get really dark until almost 2000HRS so I know on the way back we'll get full use of our new lights. Sure enough by the time we hit the turnaround point darkness was starting to creep in. Midway on the way back I got to see my light in action.

Since I already wrapped a 12+ mile (20+ KM) in the morning, my legs were too tired to keep up with my friend and basically was dropped. The trail gets really, really dark (got caught once in the dark--miscalculated my return time. Never going to do that again!) but the Magicshine really illuminated the path I was travelling. The light was bright white in the middle and outside halo spread was about 20 feet.

Along the way on the paved path I came upon a family with kids who were riding in the dark with no lights and no helmets. My friend already had passed them so they knew there were other riders behind them but when I was passing them, they pulled over to the side and stopped! Perhaps they thought a vehicle was coming from behind them otherwise why stop?

Since then I've only gone riding in the dark around my condo complex just to see how long the light's charge will last and so far its still good. I guess I haven't reached the 3 hour runtime yet. Yesterday I rode for 9.8 miles (15.8 KM) but got back to my car in time and didn't need the light.

Next time I'll take pics of the Magicshine out on the trail.
